Federal rules and CMS explanation
Medicare’s usual drug benefit
Part D is Medicare’s prescription drug benefit. CMS runs Medicare; it is a federal agency.
As of September 26, 2026, basic Part D excludes medicines when their use is weight loss or weight management.
Part D may cover a medicine for a different accepted medical use, subject to the plan’s drug list and approval rules.

A temporary programme is a separate route
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge temporarily covers certain weight medicines, under programme terms checked September 26, 2026.
GLP-1 is a body substance that helps control blood sugar and appetite.
The name is also used for medicines that act like that body substance.
As checked September 26, 2026, eligible Bridge patients pay $50 for a monthly supply of a covered medicine.
Part D’s yearly drug-spending limit does not include the $50 you pay monthly through the Bridge.
The programme begins July 1, 2026 and ends December 31, 2027.
Bridge medicine payments are handled separately from your usual Part D drug-plan payments.
In 2026, a single service handles Bridge approval requests and pharmacy payments.
Ask the person prescribing your medicine who will send your Bridge approval request to that service.
Eligibility depends on age, weight, health conditions and plan type; it requires a prescription and approval in advance.

Prior authorisation means approval arranged before the medicine is supplied.
Under terms checked September 26, 2026, people who have type 2 diabetes use ordinary Part D instead of the Bridge.
Bridge access in 2026 excludes anyone whose Part D plan covered a GLP-1 medicine during that year.
