How can I check the health professional’s licence?

Ask for a full name, title and licence number. Keep them beside you when you search. A licence is the state’s permission to work in a profession.

Use the state record

Washington’s free licence search accepts a name or licence number, as checked September 30, 2026.

It shows whether the licence is active: whether the person still has permission to work.

The search lists board actions taken after July 1998 when the law allows the record to be public.

The law can prevent some records from being shown in this search.

For actions before July 1998, the department says to ask its customer service staff.

Ask the board whether the public record leaves out part of the person’s history.

What to look at

Discipline means a board took action over a professional’s conduct or practice.

Read the person’s licence record yourself; a website badge cannot take its place.

  • Does the full name match the person the service named?
  • Does the professional title match?
  • Does the record say the licence is active?
  • Are there written board decisions about the person’s conduct or licence to read? Have the board explain the decisions in the record.

What a clear record cannot tell you

The Washington search cautions that an empty discipline record is neither a recommendation nor a guarantee of skill.

It is still fair to ask about experience with the condition you want help with.

  • What will you assess before discussing a medicine?
  • Who handles questions after the visit?
  • How do I request my notes from this visit?
